When you’re headed on a healthy path, you start thinking about new things you never even though about before. I started by being a vegetarian; then I learned about eating organic (if you haven’t yet, you should read 18 Worst Additives in Food); finally, I learned about chemicals in daily used products (please read 225+ Chemicals you Put in your Body Daily in Beauty Products and 18 Worst Chemicals in Beauty Products). OMG! I keep thinking staying ignorant is easier! At the same time, it’s better to find out all of this now, that you’re healthy, you can detox you body and make intelligent and safe changes; some people don’t get that chance and find out too late.
Why are regular deodorants so bad?
Deodorants prevent bad odor by killing the bacteria in sweat. The real problem are antiperspirants, which is what you normally find in stores. But, why are they so bad? Besides fragances, parabens and pesticides, they contain aluminum, which is used to stop perspiration (sweating). Most deodorants found in stores are antiperspirants too. The bad part of all of this is that your body sweats for a reason, we eliminate toxins through sweat, and it’s very simple: if we don’t get rid of it, it stays in our body. To make things even worse, those toxins end up in our lymphatic system, which is the drainage system of the body. Do you get the picture already? There are theories that say that those built up toxins in the lymph nodes can cause breast cancer. What to do now?
Because of all I mentioned above, I stopped using pretty much anything that contained chemicals, but stop using deodorant? I didn’t want to stink either. Believe me, I’ve tried many brands of “healthy” store-brand deodorants and the results were always bad: I either smelled or got dermatitis! I always had to go back to regular deodorant and I hated it. Well, this is exactly the reason why I wanted to make my own deodorant, I don’t mind sweating, I just don’t want to stink 😉
What do you need?
- 3 tbsp coconut oil
- 1 tbsp avocado. You can use hemp or almond oil instead.
- 3 tbsp baking soda
- 3 tbsp arrowroot powder
- 15–20 drops of any essential oil. Here are some ideas: Citric oils smell clean, Tea Tree is an amazing antibacterial, Lavender is great for sensitive skin, you make the choice. Please keep in mind you shouldn’t get direct sunlight right after application when you use the citric essential oils
Melt the coconut oil in a small pan. Remove from heat and put it in a glass or stainless steel container. Add the avocado oil. Then add the baking soda and arrowroot powder. Mix it all together until you get an homogeneous consistency. Finally, add the Essential Oil of your choice. Mix together and keep it closed when you’re not using it. I recommend you put it in the fridge for some hours, until it hardens. You can use your fingers or a small spoon for application.
I’ve been looking for a good deodorant recipe, probably since 2013. You can just imagine how happy I feel about finally making it on my own. This is my Instagram, if you want to see when i made it. Now, there’s something I want to mention, this deodorant cannot be in a hot temperatures (without melting). Which means, if you’re traveling to a Caribbean, going camping or to the beach, I wouldn’t take it. For those moments, you can always use the Natural Sensitive Deodorant infused with dōTERRA Douglas Fir & Greek Orange and it works amazingly. As a matter of fact, that’s what I’ve been using for the past year and a half, and I love it. From now on, I will use both, my homemade and doTERRA deodorants, when I run out of one, I’ll just use the other one.
I love the Natural Sensitive Deodorant infused with dōTERRA Douglas Fir & Greek Orange, it doesn’t have have aluminum or fragrances, so if you don’t have the time to make your own deodorant, this is a great option.
