Essential Oils for the Second & Third Trimester

I always say pregnancies are beautiful. Your body is allowing another life to start, your whole self is focused on doing its job, and this couldn’t be anything less than a miracle. The whole process is something to sherish, from the moment you find out you’re pregnant, to the moment you feel the fist kick, until the moment you give birth. It really is an amazing experience.

On the other hand, being pregnant is hard. You can feel nausea, fatigue, back pain, cramps, bad circulation, digestion and sleep issues. This is without taking in consideration, the roller coaster of emotions you’re feeling. It can be challenging, specially when you cannot take any medicine and you just have to deal with those symptoms. It’s simply part of the journey.

During my first pregnancy, I had not discovered Essential Oils yet, and let me tell you, what a difference it was! My emotions were like a volcano, they could (and did) go off at any given time; when I got sick or had a headache, I would just suffer and be miserable; if I had back pain, I could not even move; when I couldn’t sleep I would just stay awake all night and take a nap the next day (if I was lucky!). I wasn’t easy, but I made it through it.

Contrary, this pregnancy has been more bearable. Not because it has been easy, but because I have the tools to handle many different things coming up. I can say I’ve got many symptoms, but my Essential Oils have made me survive in the process. Here go my recommendations

Safety during pregnancy 

Choose the right brand

Essential oils are no strangers to the human metabolism because they can be found in what we eat and drink daily. Now, here comes the tricky part. Pure, well-tested and therapeutic-grade Essential Oils are the best thing you can use through your pregnancy. Cheap, store-brand and not well tested Essential Oils are not. Even some recognized brands won’t provide the quality you need and deserve, so I would be super careful about choosing a good brand. Please don’t believe me, take a look at this independent study where they compare popular essential oil brands: Best Essential Oil Brands Based on In-Depth Reviews, read this and compare for yourself. I’ve read in many places that taking Essential Oil internally during pregnancy is safe. Please keep in mind I’m only talking about the ones from doTERRA. Sincerely, in my personal opinion, I would use them when it’s necessary only.

Sensitivity

In addition, when you’re pregnant, you can be extra sensitive. Your sense of smell is super sharp. Start by putting some oils in a diffuser and see how you like them, if you don’t like it, you can always turn it off. When applying them topically, please don’t forget to dilute them, even a little more than normal, because you’re skin will also be more sensitive than usual. You also want to keep in mind that some essential oils are photosensitive, it’s usually all the citruses. Applying them topically and then exposing yourself to sunlight is not a good idea because it can leave spots on your skin, specially when pregnant

What Oil to avoid during pregnancy?

Pregnant women should avoid essential oils with high levels of phenols, ethers and aromatic aldehydes, as they can sometimes irritate the skin due to their molecular shape.

Essential Oils for physical symptoms

Headaches

Past Tense. I’ve used this blend like crazy, I’ve gone through 3 bottles already (and I’m only on week 19). It’s super effective and safe. Remember a headache can be caused by many factors, make sure you rest, relax and drink plenty of water (a headache is the first sign of dehydration)

Back pain

Deep Blue. This blend is witchcraft! Seriously, it is so effective it’s just amazing. During the second and specially on the third trimester, having lower back pain is normal, due to the extra weight you’re carrying on your abdomen. But, you don’t have to just suffer, this blend will help you feel better again. You can apply it topically before any type of physical activity (like going to the grocery store LOL!), after a hard day or before bed. Usually you can feel the difference within minutes. Another oils you can add to the equation are: Copaiba, Frankincense, Turmeric, Wintergreen, Peppermint, AromaTouch

Digestive issues

DigestZen. Acid reflex is like a synonym of pregnancy. This blend is amazing because it will help you a lot to prevent it or even reverse it. If you know you’re going to eat a big meal, drink it before the meal; if you feel like you overate, you can take it after. Give it some time and you’ll see. Some other supplements to add are Terrazyme (enzymes) and PB Assist (probiotics).

Morning sickness

Peppermint. If you’re still experiencing morning sickness, or if you feel many food aversions, you can use this oil. I carry it with me everywhere I go. I put it in my Necklace Diffuser and or drink it with water before or after a meal. It has saved my life!

A cold

There’s little room for your lungs in the third trimester

Breathe, Peppermint, Eucalyptus aromatically in a diffuser. You can also use it topically on your back, chest and throat. Something that I also use is the Flu Shot in a Bottle, I apply it on my spine and the bottom of my feet, pretty amazing! Note: when I took that picture I wasn’t pregnant, I would use 10 drops of each now

Breathing

Breathe is an amazing Essential Oil that will help you open your airways and will give you that extra help, specially when your lungs are completely squeezed by your baby. Starting around month 6 or 7, your baby will take a lot of space; by the end of the pregnancy, you will feel like you can barely breathe in some moments, and that’s normal. The blend called Breathe is amazing! You can dilute it while you sleep and/or apply it topically in your chest, back and neck. You’ll feel way better for sure. Some other oils to add to the mix are Peppermint and Eucalyptus. If you combine the 3 of them, you’ll witness pure magic 😉

Skin

Your prenatal vitamins will help you get all the nutrients your baby and you need. Not only the ones vitals, but also the ones to keep simple things, like your skin, in good shape. Another thing I would add to the equation is this Super Rich Body Lotion. I’ not exaggerating, I put it on my belly and hips at least twice a day. It makes my belly stay moisturized and little greasy through the whole day. This is exactly what we want, otherwise it feels dry and itchy.

Essential Oils for emotional balance & sleep

Anxiety

Aromatouch and Balance together are amazing. You can make a roller bottle with them. I put 2 drops of each on my necklace diffuser and it really calms me down. I wear it all the time, so if a crazy moment comes up, I’m well equipped.

Crazy hormones

Clary Calm. This blend is magic in a bottle. It really helps you feel relaxed, grounded and present. Although I love it, I don’t overuse it, I use it only when I really need it because it has many oils that help regulate your hormones and I don’t want it to mess with my pregnancy hormones. I’ve used it it very stressful days throught the pregnancy and I couldn’t figure out why I was so calm and in control of my emotions, until I realized I was using this oil.

Sleep

Lavender by excellence. Some other oils and blends that helps are Serenity, Copaiba, Balance, Wild Orange, Vetiver, among others. A great idea is to diffuse one or more of them through the night. You can also make a blend of them in a roller and dilute it with Fractionated Coconut Oil
