During winter time you need some extra help keeping some areas in your body moisturized, especially the ones that are in constant exposure. Marking you own lip balm is an easy and fun DIY to do with your friends, kids or by yourself. By the way, you might also like my Super Rich Body Lotion DIY recipe.
Why you need to make your own lip balm?
Have you ever stopped for a second to think how to make a lip balm? Commercial lip balms contain so any chemicals in them, it’s scary! How many of those ingredients are really necessary? After writing 18 Worst Chemicals in Beauty Products and all this questioning, I decided to find a good recipe for lip balms. What I found out is that they are super easy to make and that you actually don’t need many ingredients to make an amazing lip balm. Do you know you only need 6 ingredients? It gets even better! It’s so much cheaper to make them yourself, seriously!
What do you need?
- 2 TBSP of Beeswax
- 2 TBSP of Shea butter
- 2 TBSP of Coconut oil
- Vitamin E oil. If you have Vitamin E laying around, somewhere in your house, you can get the oil out of them and use it for this recipe (you poke them with a needle or safety pin and then squeeze them). Another option is to use this Vitamin E
- Essential Oils (I will mention some good combinations bellow). You need good quality essential oils, otherwise you’re still getting a ton of toxins in your body. It totally defeats the purpose! This is why I suggest doTERRA’s essential oils. They are pure and have the highest quality standards in the market. If you don’t believe me, that’s OK, but please read Best Essential Oil Brands Based on In-Depth Reviews
- Containers. You have 2 options here. You can use Lip Balm Tubes. Depending on your needs and preferences, you can also use these Glass Jars. You can always make a batch and save the rest for a future DIY
My favorite Essential Oil blends
How do you make it?
Put the beeswax, the Shea butter and the coconut oil in a small pot. Let them melt. Remove from heat and add the vitamin E and the Essential Oils. You cannot warm up Essential Oils since their aromatic compounds will evaporate. I would recommend putting between 10 and 15 drops of Essential Oils total. You can use some of my recommendations or let your imagination go crazy 😉 Mix all the ingredients very well. Then, insert the mix in the tubes. Just so you know, you don’t have hours for this process, it will start cooling down and solidifying in about 5 minutes. Let them cool, put the lid on and store them at room temperature.
Some things to keep in mind
This recipe makes between 12 and 15 lip balms. Please remember they are made out of oils and beeswax, if you leave them in your car in the middle of summer, you’ll end up with a very greasy disaster. Also, as they don’t have chemicals added, I wouldn’t recommend making 200 lip balms for your personal use. Make them as you need them or with someone, so you can use that batch and then make a next one.
Finally, just as an idea, Beeswax Lip Balms are great gifts, if you’re into a non-toxic lifestyle and you want to teach people by example, giving them one of your creations is a great idea. They will open their eyes to a whole new world of DIY possibilities. The pictures below are from the day when I did my first DIY. I invited some friends over and we made 2 different flavors for our lip balms. You can follow me on Instagram for more DIYs ideas
